History-
Castle Rock was incorporated in 1881, situated between the big plains
and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, shielded from the worst
winter storms. The area surrounding Castle Rock was a well suited
location for the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians and the wild game, such
as buffalo, antelope, and deer, which they sought for food.
Jeremiah Gould was one of
the original homesteaders. He owned 160 acres to the south of “the
rock.” The community at this time consisted of a few shacks for
prospectors, quarry workers and other hired hands. In 1847, after
Castle Rock officially became designated the seat of Douglas County,
Gould donated 120 acres to “be known as Castle Rock.”
Recreation- Castle Rock is
home to a town recreation center that is "private club" quality. In
addition Castle Rock has numerous baseball and softball fields with
playgrounds and picnic areas, swimming pools, world class golf courses,
numerous public and private tennis courts and bike paths.
During all times of the
year, the Castle Rock Recreation Department conducts recreational
leagues in many different sports, including basketball, volleyball and
softball. There are also ongoing recreational activities for everyone
from preschool to senior participants.
